Concept derived from the fan-based, lyrical miscue within the song Caribou from the band's 1987 release Come On Pilgrim. The actual lyric is "Repents", though often misheard as "Red Pants" through the rasp of Charles Thompson's (Frank Black's) scream. Albeit unsubstantiated, multiple live-recordings strongly suggest Mr. Thompson's acknowledgement of the popular miscue.
